Our first day venturing out of Cascais

On Monday

, we spent the day with a local guide who showed us some highlights of Lisbon, Sintra, and the amazing coastline. It was an overview and introduction to the city. We have many things we are looking forward to doing at another time. There is a train from Cascais to Lisbon every 20 minutes so it will be easy. We can then take the metro to various neighborhoods to explore some more. Lisbon is extremely hilly so it is not conducive to just strolling from one area to another. We stopped at some great spots that overlook the city and also went into three different cathedrals.

After Lisbon we went on to the charming town of Sintra, high on a mountain just inland from the sea. This is another very hilly town but I am really looking forward to spending a day there exploring and touring the palaces.

On the way back, we following the wonderful Atlantic coast where we saw a town with houses clinging to the cliffs. Our last stop was a marker for the western-most point of continental Europe.

It was a great day that whet our appetites for more.

What a wonderful first journey. Does the metro get you around Lisbon enough to avoid some hills? It'll be exciting to experience history and buildings 100's of years older than America. Please keep sharing, we appreciate it!

What a wonderful day, and interesting places to return to. I know it's chilly, but it's great that the blue sky has followed you from Carolina!
