Some Small Updates and Answers to a Couple More Questions

It has now been two full weeks since we submitted our visa applications. We are planning everything based on the assumption that we will hear about being approved by late November. The waiting really is the hardest part.

First things first: We have decided to bring Chili (the dog) with us when we leave in December for Lisbon. This will make that trip especially "interesting." Picture two frazzled Raffertys, six pieces of luggage + carryons, on freaked out dog, one freaked out dog's mother, and a rather large crate. It is strongly suggested not to sedate the dog in any way. However, the guidelines do not say anything about sedating the dog's mom.

In the good news department, our house in Chapel Hill has already been rented. This means that one concern has been lifted. We have already started packing away our personal belongings.

Now to the questions:

Q: Why Portugal of all places?

A: Portuguese policies are very favorable to expats. While we are anxious about our visa applications, it is a much better process than for other countries. This is especially true for retirees who have nothing better to do than spend euros over there. Taxes are also in our favor. They have excellent and economical health care -- both national and private. The overall cost of living is much lower than in the US. The Portuguese people welcome expats from all over the world. The climate is great. We will be able to travel throughout Europe easily from the airport in Lisbon. Everyone we have ever spoken to who has been to Portugal has raved about it.

Q. What is the situation with COVID?

A. The number of cases has been increasing throughout Europe. Starting yesterday, Portugal has implemented what amounts to a lock-down for two weeks. It very well could be extended. If it is still on when we arrive, we will still be allowed to go to the grocery store, take our dog out, and take walks. Masks are mandatory anywhere in public. Both of us are fine with all of this. It tells us that the Portuguese government is serious about efforts to contain the virus. It also indicates that the populace is willing to adhere to these guidelines. How refreshing. We will both need to present negative PCR test results to board our flight to Lisbon.
